Chester is described as “old enough to make your spine tingle, yet young enough in spirit to be effortlessly fashionable. Small enough to explore easily on foot, but big enough to be wonderfully cosmopolitan.”
From its beginnings as a Roman fortress 2,000 years ago, Chester has managed to retain its unique character whilst offering everything that you would expect from a modern city today.
It is located in the heart of the UK about 197 miles from London and it is in the most southerly part of England's Northwest region. You can use Chester as a base for visiting Liverpool and Manchester, the Peak District, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Snowdonia.
Shopping in Chester is unique. From boutiques to jewellers, one of the most varied taste sensations with cafes, restaurants and delis, combined with the high street stores you expect. And all of this is set amidst scenery steeped in Roman and Medieval history.
Chester Races is a magnificent social occasion. Step out in style onto the Roodee - the oldest racecourse in Britain and admire the well-dressed racegoers, the stunning setting of the course, and of course the horses themselves. Chester really comes to life on race days - and never more so than at the prestigious May Festival.
Abbeygate sits opposite a leisure centre including gym and swimming pool and is also just a short stroll from the university. The city walls, and amenities within, are very close at hand.

Take Junction 20 of the M6 for the M56. Then Junction 15 of M56 for the M53. M53 becomes the A55 at Junction 12. Take the exit here for A56 and follow into the City Centre. At the large Gorse Stacks roundabout take the last exit onto ring road. At the next roundabout you should double-back on yourself and take the first left for Victoria Rd. We are on the left after 100 metres.
Chester Bus Terminal runs many buses near to us. Any bus that heads to the university is ok. The Northgate Church stop, immediately after the first roundabout is opposite our rear entrance.
Chester Train Station is roughly 1km from Abbeygate. Any bus that runs to the university will take you past Abbeygate. You need the first stop on Liverpool Road.
